He was characterized by his tireless, unmatched work ethic and academic acumen. He was generous with his extensive knowledge and contributed to the legal preparation of generations of lawyers and judges.
Throughout his wide-ranging career, Juan Manuel significantly influenced the Dominican legal system by collaborating in essential pieces of legislation, litigating landmark cases that resulted in groundbreaking judicial precedents and enriching the legal doctrine through extensive teaching and publication of books and articles.

In 2010, the British legal directory Chambers and Partners granted him the Lifetime Achievement Award and referred to him as a “the lawyer of lawyers”, recognizing him as one of the most renowned and complete legal professionals in the country. In 2011 and 1996 Juan Manuel received the Knight of the Order of Merit Duarte, Sánchez and Mella, the most prestigious award granted by the government of the Dominican Republic in honor of distinguished service to the nation, by the President of the Dominican Republic.
